If you would like to arrive in Brindisi a day early and have a little extra time to rest and explore, there is an early arrival option on October 11th. You will have the opportunity with your extra time to take a city tour of Lecce on the morning of October 12th
You will be picked up at the airport and will transfer to the amazing city of Lecce, the baroque Florence of the south. Upon arrival in Lecce you will have time to get settled, rest, and then meet for your welcome talk and dinner. Sleep in Lecce
Today you will venture further South to reach both sides of the heel of Italy: Otranto and Gallipoli. Otranto is a lovely city with a small harbor, a castle, an incredibly well-preserved medieval city, and a beautiful cathedral that hosts one of the most famous mosaic floors of the South, depicting a stupendous Tree of Life. Gallipoli, the Pearl of the Ionian Sea, is one of Apulia’s finest seaside destinations. You will enjoy the different seaside atmosphere and good food. Sleep in Lecce .
Today you will travel to the famed trulli area of Apulia and the lush Valle d’Itria. Blanketed with vineyards and olive groves, this valley is dotted with hundreds of trulli, traditional dry stone structures with conical roofs that were used by Apulian farmers. Our first stop will be the beautiful white painted city of Locorotondo, followed by the incredible Alberobello (Unesco site) and its trulli . The pleasant and vivacious atmosphere of smaller Apulian towns will give you profound exposure to the big heart of Southern Italy. Afterward, we will continue our journey to the city of Matera. Today you will enjoy the very special atmosphere of Matera and will discover some of its secrets. You will learn about Sassi or stone neighborhoods and will have time to explore its most impressive buildings, churches and tiny alleyways. You may feel a sense of déjà vu because the area’s Middle Eastern appearance has served as the setting for the most famous biblical movies. Pasolini, Rosi, Tornatore, the Taviani brothers, Bruce Beresfort, Catherine Hardwick and Mel Gibson all chose Matera for its “Sassi” feel. Sleep in Matera
Today we will visit the charming little town of Altamura, famous for its cathedral - but not only. The local pastry shops are well worth a visit - and you will therefore enjoy a tasting of local specialties including Tette delle Monache and some of the famous local breads. On the way, we will stop at the cryptic Chapel of Original Sin, described by some as the Sistine Chapel of Rupestrian art. Sleep in Matera
Today you will start your drive towards the Campania region and the site of Paestum, where you will tour its amazing Greek-Roman archaeological site. The ancient temple of Hera was built in 550 BC and has been painstakingly preserved many times through the ages. Tonight you will enjoy a great dinner of local specialties. Sleep in Paestum
This morning you will find yourself in a countryside estate learning how to cook famous southern Italian dishes while holding a glass of fine Southern Italian wine. After your cooking experience and lunch you will visit a water buffalo farm and will see how buffalo mozzarella is made. You will have the rest of your day to just relax and enjoy the area. You will drive from Paestum to Ravello and Positano. In Ravello you will be able to take in one of the world’s most talked about views from the gardens of Villa Cimbrone. You will have time to enjoy a glass of Ravello’s DOC wine here or maybe some of the area’s world-famous Limoncello before heading down to picturesque Positano. Breathtaking views, multicoloured homes overlooking the sea, and a beautiful beach with the best gelato ever, will make your visit memorable. You will then reach the Sorrento coast and will check in at your local hotel. Sleep outside Sorrento.
During this morning’s cruise to Capri you will enjoy excellent views of the Sorrentine Peninsula and the striking “teeth” of Capri, the Faraglioni cliffs. Enjoy the highlights of Capri including the Phoenician Steps -- 800 ancient stairs to a romantic viewpoint, the Belvedere delle Noci -- the island’s limestone rock formations and the Church of San Michele – location of the majolica tiles of Adam and Eve. If you just prefer to relax you can stay back at your lovely hotel and spend some time shopping and strolling in Sorrento. Any visit to Southern Italy would not be complete without a stop in Pompeii. A really fun and engaging local guide will join you to explain how this Roman settlement was locked in time when Mount Vesuvius covered it with ash in 79 AD. The excavations started at the end of the 1700’s and the results are unforgettable. In the afternoon, you’ll go to mount Vesuvius itself where you will learn the legends that surround this powerful volcano. You will then enjoy a great wine tasting at a local great estate. Enjoy a walking tour along the greatest avenues of Naples with an experienced and entertaining local guide. The grandiosity of this city’s countless royal buildings and grand churches is a great surprise to the first-time visitor. You will then tour the archaeological museum of Naples, one of the world’s best. Ancient objects from Pompeii, Ercolano, and other ancient Mediterranean centres will give you a unique insight into the ancient Greek and Roman cultures.
