A Taste of Calabria, Basilicata, Apulia, and Campania with Museo ItaloAmericano – Fall 2015

DAY 0 - September 14 - Monday

Fly from the US to Reggio Calabria, making your flight connection through Rome or Milano. If you book your round trip flight to one of these cities, we can book your local flights to and from the first and last cities of the trip.

DAY 1 - September 15 - Tuesday - Reggio Calabria

Upon arrival in Reggio Calabria you will be transferred to your hotel. You will have time to rest up from your flight before meeting your guide and fellow travelers for a welcome prosecco and a feast of local specialties. Sleep in Reggio Calabria

DAY 2 - September 16 - Wednesday - Reggio Calabria and Scilla

This morning you will enjoy a city tour and a visit to the National Museum. The highlight of the day will surely be the famous Bronzes of Riace - two beautiful Greek statues dating back to the 5th Century BC. In the afternoon you will reach the small village of Scilla. Its Medieval castle, breathtaking views over the Messina strait and the picturesque fishermen's Chianalea district will make this exploration quite memorable. Sleep in Reggio Calabria

DAY 3 - September 17 - Thursday - Belmonte Calabro and Matera

This morning you will say goodbye to Calabria and will head to Matera (Basilicata region). En route to Matera we will stop for lunch in a charming little village, and in the late afternoon you will hopefully experience one of the most beautiful sunsets you have ever seen. Matera's white stone buildings turn pink and orange as the light of the day fades away.... You may feel a sense of déjà vu because the area’s Middle Eastern appearance has served as the setting for the most famous biblical movies. Pasolini, Rosi, Tornatore, the Taviani brothers, Bruce Beresfort, Catherine Hardwick and Mel Gibson all chose Matera for its Sassi feel. Tonight you will taste some of the most interesting vegetarian dishes that our cuisine offers, including the tasty cicoria con pure' di fave. Sleep in Matera

DAY 4 - September 18 - Friday - Matera

This day is dedicated to the discovery of Matera’s sassi or stone neighborhoods. You will have plenty of time to penetrate deep into Matera’s most impressive buildings, churches and tiny alleyways. We will stop to spend time with the locals and enjoy the mystical energy of this special city with a local meal right in its sassi . Sleep in Matera

DAY 5 - September 19 - Saturday - Lecce

This morning you will say goodbye to Matera and head towards Lecce, the baroque Florence of the South. We will start with a tour of Lecce’s world famous duomo, the Church of the Holy Cross, and then continue to visit the monuments and buildings that make Lecce one of the most appealing cities in Italy. We will also enjoy an amazing meal at an ancient, historical private home. Sleep in Lecce

DAY 6 - September 20 - Sunday - Otranto and Lecce

We will take a morning trip to enjoy Otranto, a UNESCO site and charming historical city facing the Adriatic Sea. Its long history will be visible in the quaint centre, its beautiful castle, and imposing Norman cathedral, where we will learn about the unusual and stunning mosaic which covers its floor. We will have a relaxing afternoon in Lecce. Sleep in Lecce

DAY 7 - September 21 - Monday - Ostuni, Alberobello (or Locorotondo), Bari

This morning we will leave Lecce and head to the beautiful white painted cities of Ostuni and Alberobello, which will serve as today’s main attractions. The pleasant and vivacious atmosphere of these small Apulian towns will give you profound exposure to the big heart of Southern Italy. We will make a point of stopping to meet our friends in these villages and learn more about their lives. Sleep in Bari

DAY 8 - September 22 - Tuesday - Altamura, Gravina and Bari

This morning you will pay a visit to two small but impressive cities: Altamura, famous for its beautiful cathedral and for a delightful pastry shop where you will sample the famous Sise delle Monache, and Gravina, a Pugliese city rich with buildings excavated out of tufa rock. You will then reach Bari, the capital of Apulia. Sleep in Bari

DAY 9 - September 23 - Wednesday - Castel del Monte and Naples

You will start the day with a visit to the amazing Basilica of San Nicola, followed by a walk through the historical centre of Bari and some of its most traditional tiny streets. There you will see the local women still selling orechiette pasta outside their homes, freshly made by hand a few hours earlier. You will then say goodbye to Bari and head towards awesome Castel del Monte. This very impressive and mysterious building is today a UNESCO site, and surely is one of the most important left to us by Frederick II. You will then drive towards Naples, where you will check in at your centrally located hotel. Sleep in Naples

DAY 10 - September 24 - Thursday - Naples

Enjoy a walking tour along the greatest avenues of Naples with an experienced and entertaining local guide. The grandiosity of this city’s countless royal buildings and grand churches is a great surprise to the first-time visitor. We will also venture deep into the gritty side of Naples, visiting local markets and ancient neighborhoods. In the afternoon you will visit the archaeological museum of Naples, one of the world’s best. Ancient objects from Pompeii, Ercolano, and other ancient Mediterranean centers will give you a unique insight into the ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Sleep in Naples

DAY 11 - September 25 - Friday - Pompeii and Sorrento Coast

Any visit to Southern Italy would not be complete without a stop in Pompeii. An archaeologist will join you to explain how this Roman settlement was locked in time when Mount Vesuvius covered it with ash in 79 AD. The excavations started at the end of the 1700’s and the results are unforgettable. You will then head towards the Sorrento coastline - where you will enjoy some incredible views and a lunch overlooking the sea. You will then head back to Naples for your farewell to Italy. Sleep in Naples
