This morning you will enjoy a walking tour along the greatest avenues of Naples with an experienced and entertaining local guide. The grandiosity of this city’s countless royal buildings and grand churches is a great surprise to the first-time visitor. You will then tour the archaeological museum of Naples, one of the world’s best. Ancient objects from Pompeii, Ercolano, and other ancient Mediterranean centers will give you a unique insight into the ancient Greek and Roman cultures. In the afternoon, we will transfer to our hotel on the Amalfi coast near to Sorrento. Sleep near Sorrento .
Any visit to Southern Italy would not be complete without a stop in Pompeii. Your local guide will join you to explain how this Roman settlement was locked in time when Mount Vesuvius covered it with ash in 79 AD. The excavations started at the end of the 1700’s and the results are unforgettable. In the afternoon, we will venture to a winery restaurant along the slopes of Mount Vesuvius You will enjoy a wine tasting lunch made from the grapes grown on the slopes of volcano. You will drive from Sorrento along the Amalfi Coast. In Ravello you will be able to take in one of the world’s most talked about views from the gardens of Villa Cimbrone. You will have time to enjoy a glass of Ravello’s DOC wine here or maybe some of the area’s world-famous Limoncello before heading down to picturesque Amafli. Today we will tour the amazing Greek-Roman archaeological site in Paestum. The ancient temple of Hera was built in 550 BC and has been painstakingly preserved many times through the ages. Afterwards, you will visit a water buffalo farm, enjoy a delicious lunch and see how buffalo mozzarella is made. Sleep in Paestum
Today we will venture to the region of Basilicata to visit and enjoy the very special atmosphere of the city of Matera where you will discover some of its secrets. You will learn about Sassi or stone neighborhoods and will have time to explore its most impressive buildings, churches and tiny alleyways. You may feel a sense of déjà vu because the area’s Middle Eastern appearance has served as the setting for some well-known movies. Today you will travel to the famed trulli area of Apulia and the lush Valle d’Itria. Blanketed with vineyards and olive groves, this valley is dotted with hundreds of trulli, traditional dry-stone structures with conical roofs that were used by Apulian farmers. We will stop along the way for olive oil and wine tastings followed by a visit to the incredible town of Alberobello (Unesco site) and its trulli. The pleasant and vivacious atmosphere of smaller Apulian towns will give you profound exposure to the big heart of Southern Italy. Sleep in Salve di Fasano
Today you will go explore Bari and amazing St Nicholas basilica -and will walk in the historical centre were all of the local women make their fresh pasta (orecchiette) and sell it from their home windows. You will then venture to Castel del Monte and its mysterious and fascinating history. The octagonal shaped building is considered a genius example of Medieval architecture and its hidden symbols have engaged scholars for centuries. Today it is a Unesco site and a sight not to be missed. Sleep in Salve di Fasano.
Today we will make our way to Lecce, often called the Florence of the south. It is a baroque town full of surprises -- a church dizzyingly decorated with asparagus column tops, decorative dodos, and cavorting gremlins -- inspiring someone to say the façade made him think a lunatic was having a nightmare. We will observe the Spanish influence as we tour the world-famous Church of the Holy Cross and then continue to visit the monuments and buildings that make Lecce one of the most appealing cities in Italy.
