This morning, we’ll kick off our journey at the airport hotel, where the group’s pre-night stay is arranged for a seamless start (optional pre-night stays are available for those who prefer a restful arrival day). From there, we’ll transfer to the charming town of Sulmona, nestled in the heart of the Abruzzo region. Upon arrival, we’ll check in at our centrally located hotel, perfectly situated for exploring the city. After settling in, we’ll enjoy a guided orientation tour, introducing you to Sulmona’s rich history and vibrant atmosphere. This morning, we’ll journey along breathtaking mountain roads to the picturesque village of Scanno, home to the famous heart-shaped lake. As we wander through Scanno’s charming cobblestone streets, we’ll meet local artisans and storytellers eager to share their deep-rooted traditions, craftsmanship, and the pride they take in their exquisite, timelessly beautiful traditional dresses. We’ll savor the region’s outstanding cuisine, sampling local specialties that reflect generations of culinary heritage. Afterward, we’ll take a leisurely stroll to the lake’s tranquil shores. Today, we’ll venture deep into the rugged mountains near Majella National Park to visit a women-owned sheep farm dedicated to preserving the time-honored traditions of shepherding. During our visit, we’ll witness a captivating cheese-making demonstration and gain insight into the region’s rich pastoral heritage. Our experience will be topped off with a delicious lunch featuring arrosticini, traditional lamb skewers cooked to perfection over handcrafted wood-burning grills—a true local delicacy best enjoyed fresh off the fire. After lunch, we’ll take a scenic walk through the park’s stunning natural landscapes, leading to a hidden cultural treasure nestled within the park’s ancient surroundings. Upon our return to Sulmona, we’ll visit a renowned confetti factory, where we’ll discover the art behind these iconic almond-covered candies, celebrated throughout Italy Overnight in Sulmona.
Today, we’ll visit the breathtaking Rocca Calascio, a striking fortress perched atop a dramatic rock peak that earned a place National Geographic’s list of the world’s most beautiful castles. As we explore its ancient walls, we’ll immerse ourselves in captivating tales—part history, part legend—of hidden treasures, secret passageways, noble knights, and strategic ties to coastal castles. You’ll also learn why this iconic site has served as the backdrop for films like Ladyhawke, The Name of the Rose, and The American. Next, we’ll indulge in a tasting of the region’s famous Canestrato sheep cheese at a local producer, savoring its rich flavors. Afterward, we’ll explore the stunning natural landscapes of Campo Imperatore, a true wonderland of the Abruzzo region. Our day will conclude with a scenic drive to the coastal city of Pescara, where we’ll check into our hotel for the night. Overnight in Pescara
Today we will venture south along the coast to the Trabocchi route where you will view and visit these interesting and scenic fishing contraptions built on stilts over the sea that dot the coast. We will enjoy a lunch of extremely fresh seafood while sitting over the sea at one of these trabocchi. On our return, we will stop by a local winery to sample some of the regional wines and listen to some of the local traditional music. Overnight in Pescara
This morning we will leave Abruzzo and travel north to the region of Le Marche. We will visit the charming coastal town of San Benedetto del Tronto, where we can stroll along its palm-lined streets before heading inland to the historic town of Ascoli Piceno. Here, we will explore the beautiful Piazza del Popolo, one of Italy's most elegant squares and sample the local specialty, olive ascolane- fried, stuffed olives. We will finish the day with a scenic drive to Senigallia, where we will spend the next two nights. Overnight in Senigallia
Toay, we will visit the tiny Republic of San Marino, one of the world's oldest and smallest independent states. We will explore its medieval walled city, perched on Monte Titano, and take in its sweeping views of the surronding countryside. In the afternoon, we will visit Faro, another picturesque seaside village before returning to Senigallia for the evening. Overnight in Senigallia
Today we will head to the Emilia-Romagna region with a visit to its largest city of Bologna. Known for its rich history, culinary delights and medieval towers, you will delighted as you walk through this vibrant city. You can sample the many delights of the area at one of the many osterias or food stalls near to Piazza Maggiore. In the afternoon, we will head to another charming city in Emilia-Romagna, Ferrara, our base for the next three nights. Overnight in Ferrara
Today, we will explore the Po River Delta, a UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve teeming with wildlife and natural beauty. This peaceful region, known for its wetlands and lagoons, offers the perfect setting for birdwatching and relaxing boat rides through its waterways. After a boat ride and a walk along the delta, we will return to Ferrara for a delightful cooking class and dinner. Overnight in Ferrara
Today we will visit the stunning city of Ravenna, renowned for its Byzantine mosaics. Marvel at the intricate designs in the Basilica di San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. We will return this afternoon to Ferrara where you will have a free afternoon before we meet this evening for a festive farewell dinner. Overnight in Ferrara
